Term 3 Happenings

Term 3 was a very busy and exciting term. Here are some photos of what we got up to:

We all wrote interesting speeches on a topic of our choice. Dylan, Richie and Baldeep were the Room 22 Speech finalists who went on to the Year 5 final. From there, Baldeep came 3rd and went on to the Year 5 & 6 final. We were very proud of his awesome effort!

Chanae, Keira, Jainesh and Areya represented PCS (and got very muddy!) at the Cross Country Zones. Chanae came 3rd in the 10 year old girls race, and Keira came 5th out of the 9 year old girls.

Yzabelle and Arush were part of the PCS Year 5 Mathex team that won their competition.

Samson and Sachchit performed in a Puppet Show during Book Week

Avani and Chanae represented PCS at the Gymnastics Zones. Chanae came 3rd in the vault and the Year 5 girls team came 2nd overall.

We came to school dressed up twice, for Crazy Hair day and Book Week. Baldeep even won a prize for Best Dressed! Can you tell who our favourite book characters are?

Lucky Chanae got the chance to train with the Breakers!

We are super excited about our trip to Rotoroa Island next term. Here's a link to a video about what we will be learning...

Jigsaw Art - Warren Pohatu

For art this term we each recreated one piece of Warren Pohatu's Te Wheke-o-Muturangi - without knowing what the final picture was going to look like! How do you think we did?

Learning Sign Language

This term, we have been learning about sign language. It started during New Zealand Sign Language Week back in May, when we read a journal article about it. Since then, we have learned a lot about sign language, including the alphabet, how to say our names and some other basic greetings. A couple of weeks ago, Room 22 hosted the Year 5 Kakapo Assembly. Here is a video of us practising the song we sang in sign language!

Pop Art!

We have been learning about Pop Art! Pop Art is a fun art movement that became popular in the 1960s. Pop Art is usually very bright and colourful, and it often uses images and icons that are popular in the modern world. We looked at Roy Lichtenstein’s Pop Art based on comic strips, especially examples of onomatopoeia such as ‘Pop!’ ‘Bang!’ and ‘Wham!’ We decided to use our names instead.

First, we cut a big cloud or star shape out of coloured paper, and then we glued a smaller, newspaper shape on top. Then we drew the letters of our name in bubble writing. We had to make sure they weren’t too skinny or they were too hard to cut out! Finally, we decorated the rest of our work with colourful shapes and patterns. We hope you like our Pop Art!

Creating Maps and Writing Directions

In Maths we have been learning how to create maps and write directions. For Friday Maths, we had our own treasure hunt, where we wrote directions for our classmates to find the 'treasure' we had hidden in the school! Check out some of the maps we created below, based on the picture book Peter and the Wolf.
